Every Wednesday some of our members take a hike of 3-6 miles on one of the many trails in CNY (including the North Country National Scenic Trail and the Finger Lakes Trail!).  The first Wednesday of each month during Spring, Summer and Fall is usually devoted to trail maintenance. The Wednesday hikers welcome new participants. Carpooling is the norm. Please bring lunch and sufficient water. Please call or email the leaders if you have Wednesday free and would like to hike.

The hike will start from the Upper Works parking lot north of Newcomb.  The climb up Mount Adams (elev. 3520’) gets steep near the top (ascent 1800’), but has one of the most rewarding views surrounded by the high peaks.   Fall colors should be spectacular this time of year.  If interested, please contact the leader for more info.

Let’s walk the TOBIE bike path from Thendara’s RR Station to Old Forge Pond/Beach. Next we will carpool (spotted car) from the beach to McCauley Mt. where we will hike the easy ski trail to the summit.  (Option-chairlift at a fair fare)  Bring a lunch to enjoy from the observation platform at the summit.  We will then carpool back to Thendara.

This new trail ascends and follows a ridge, drops into a small col, then follows a ridge up to a cliffy summit.  The summit offers impressive views of Gore, Snowy and Blue Ridge Mountain. Be prepared for weather. Bring water, snacks and lunch.

We will be doing maintenance on a portion of the Finger Lakes/North Country Trail for which our Chapter has responsibility. Please attend and support this important activity.  No special skills are required, just a genuine desire to ensure that trails are kept clear and marked for all hikers to enjoy.  Bring a pair of work gloves, a lunch, water, and wear appropriate clothing.  The Chapter furnishes all necessary tools. Outing will be canceled in case of severely adverse weather conditions.

Join me for a hike at one of my favorite places in Eastern Ontario. Charleston Lake Provincial Park, with its rocky shoreline and many islands, looks very much like the lakes of Northern Ontario.  We will hike the west-side trails which take us along a beautiful bay with many scenic lookouts.  The trail will cross a unique floating bridge before looping back past a lovely beach.  This area has been declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve due to its unique geology.  Participants must have a passport or other proper ID to enter Canada.   Call or email to reserve.

For Halloween it will be approaching full moon but not quite there yet. Let’s take advantage by having a night hike in the spooky woods.  We will hike past building ruins across open fields and through dark forests.  Come dressed in costume to get your  hiking treats.  We will meet in the parking lot right at sunset and the hike will be about an hour.   Everyone should bring a headlamp/flashlight in case they are needed.

We will enjoy a late fall hike at Beaver Lake. We will hike around the lake on the Lake Loop trail, also stop at the lookout tower on the Bog Trail, and depending on the group interests also Deep Woods, and Three Meadows.  There is a vehicle fee for the park so anyone wishing to meet and carpool into the park to reduce the cost should contact the trip leader Mike Burkett to arrange a meeting place and time.

Let’s work off some of that turkey with a hike to a fire tower in the Southeastern Adirondacks. There is an elevation gain of 1,525 on this hike. If there is time and interest we may hike Spruce Mountain Fire Tower just to the south. There could be snow, ice or mud. Be ready for anything with boots, snowshoes or microspikes. Bring water, snacks and lunch. Possible dinner stop if we hike Spruce Mt. also.

Hal Boyce was a long-time member of our club. He was also a dear friend. We hiked many times at Highland, both on designated trails as well as old roads and/or ski trails. We will replicate a similar hike this date. Dress for changeable conditions. Those who wish to drive to Highland can meet us in front of the Skyline Lodge at approximately 10:45 a.m. Park fee $3 per person.
