Every Wednesday some of our members take a hike of 3-6 miles on one of the many trails in CNY (including the North Country National Scenic Trail and the Finger Lakes Trail!).  The first Wednesday of each month during Spring, Summer and Fall is usually devoted to trail maintenance. The Wednesday hikers welcome new participants. Carpooling is the norm. Please bring lunch and sufficient water. Please call or email the leaders if you have Wednesday free and would like to hike.

 

 

Paddle Raquette Lake Inlets

We will paddle and investigate several Raquette Lake inlet streams: possibly Brown Tract Pond Inlet and/or South Inlet. Both are scenic, meandering streams with interesting bog plants along the shorelines Wear PFD and bring your own canoe/kayak.

 

 

Stops Along the Canal

We will visit vestiges of the old Erie Canal west of Syracuse including Simms Store, a sluiceway, a canal tener’s booth, Richmond Aqueduct, and the newly refurbished lock at the Canal Heritage Park in Port Byron.

 

 

Pillsbury Mountain Fire Tower

It will be a moderately difficult climb for this tower. The elevation gain will be 1337’.  The summit elevation is 3597’.  The only view is from the stairs of the tower, the cab is closed.  Bring the proper equipment for this hike including water snacks and lunch.

 

 

 

YM Joint Outing With Genesee Valley Chapter

The YM’s of Onondaga and Genesee Valley Chapter are planning a joint afternoon outing to enjoy the bluffs of Chimney Bluffs State Park. There is a circuit trail that we will hike through the woods and back along the bluffs overlooking the lake.  Come and enjoy the unique formation of the bluffs along the shores of Lake Ontario.

 

 

Black River Gorge Dexter to Brownville Paddle

We will put in @ Dexter Fish Island launch and travel upstream (current gets stronger as we approach Brownville). We will paddle thru a magnificent gorge and take out on an island before Brownville for snacks.  PFD required.  Bring water, snacks, sunscreen.  Bad weather cancels.

No special skills are required, just a genuine desire to ensure that trails are kept clear and marked for all hikers to enjoy. Bring a pair of work gloves, a lunch, water, and wear appropriate clothing. The Chapter furnishes all necessary tools. Outing will be cancelled in case of severely adverse weather conditions.

 

 

Watch Hill Hike

While Watch Hill has been around for some time, the DEC recently developed a new trailhead. The trail to Watch Hill is short with some steep sections leading to a ridgeline with spectacular views of Snowy Mountain and Indian Lake.  There is a steep spur trail that leads to the shore of Indian Lake and a nice beach.  If the group is up for more hiking we can stop and climb Echo Cliffs near Piseco Lake on the way home (1 mile round trip).

 

 

Mariposa State Forest

We will get an early start and climb Colvin (4057’) & then Blake (3960’) with ascent to Blake of 2800’ from the Lake road. We will back pack into the Middle Settlement Lake on Brown’s Tract Trail and Access Trail to the lean-to where we will camp. The trails are rolling, sometimes rough, go through dense forest and open up at the lake. The lean-to provides a beautiful Adirondack setting. Expect muddy spots on the trail. Bring swim suit and water shoes. Black flies should be minimal, but bring bug juice/net and hat. Please contact the leader for meeting time/place and required equipment.

We will hike the Henry Goddard Leach trail up and over Bear Den Mt. to Dial Mt, then on to Nippletop. We will return to Lake Rd. via Elk Pass.  This will be a long tough day of hiking High Peaks, so please be prepared both physically and mentally.  Bring plenty of water, snacks, lunch and bug repellent.  Please contact the leader to learn more and reserve a spot for this outing.

I will hike the rim trail, 5 miles, which has a steep ascent and steep descent. The rest is flat.  You may wish to walk through the picnic area and campgrounds and sit by the stream and small waterfalls.  After the hike, we will have a picnic and a swim in the ‘icy’ waters of the stream.  Bring a cooler, bathing suit and great weather!
