Every Wednesday some of our members take a hike of 3-6 miles on one of the many trails in CNY (including the North Country National Scenic Trail and the Finger Lakes Trail!).  The first Wednesday of each month during Spring, Summer and Fall is usually devoted to trail maintenance. The Wednesday hikers welcome new participants. Carpooling is the norm. Please bring lunch and sufficient water. Please call or email the leaders if you have Wednesday free and would like to hike.

Let’s work off some of that turkey with a hike to a fire tower in the Southeastern Adirondacks. There is an elevation gain of 1,525 on this hike. If there is time and interest we may hike Spruce Mountain Fire Tower just to the south. There could be snow, ice or mud. Be ready for anything with boots, snowshoes or microspikes. Bring water, snacks and lunch. Possible dinner stop if we hike Spruce Mt. also.

We have a full moon very early in December. Combined with the early sunsets that makes scheduling full moon hikes very easy.  Our first moonlight hike will be on December 3rd at the nature trails in Green Lakes State Park.  There is a parking area and trail head to the Deer Run Trail on Green Lakes Road (NY – 290).  We will meet there at 5:30, about half an hour after moonrise, and take a 5 mile hike on the trails.  If there is at least 6 inches of snow on the ground snowshoes or skis are required, otherwise prepare for a boot hike.  If you do not have any snowshoes or skis please contact me and I will make every attempt to borrow some for you.

This is a 1.5 mile pretty woodsy spur off the FLT that ends in a waterfall.  We’ll walk in and out, then (optional) drive 1/2 mile to Midlum Rd. and walk the 1 mile section through the woods to Midlum Hill and enjoy a great view.

A white Christmas on Tug Hill? Let’s hope so. Holidays are busy & stressful, so let’s spend a relaxing morning in the forest. If there are several inches of snow on the ground then either snowshoes or skis will be required. I will keep an eye on trail conditions, so if you have any questions, contact me. Also, contact me, if you don’t have skis or snowshoes. I might be able to arrange to borrow a few pairs of snowshoes. My plan is to return to the meeting place by 1:00pm for those that may have holiday commitments.

Snowshoe to summit of Owls Head (2812’) (ascent 1620’) with nice views of the Adirondacks and Blue Mountain. This moderate hike will be a nice workout on snow shoes. The first 2 miles is relatively flat and then the trail ascends moderately with a few steeper sections near the top. Contact the leader to confirm equipment requirements. Bring lunch and water. Dress in layers for winter conditions.

From Herlihy Rd. we snowshoe the 3.5 mile loop: uphill to Fellows Hill (no view) then gently downhill passing Spruce Pond and along creeks with little waterfalls. Bring lunch and water. If no snow, you’ll have the option of a longer boot-hike (microspikes might help if ground is frozen). This is a joint outing with the FLT.

Sawteeth is #35 in height at 4,100 feet.  We will hike in from the Ausable Lake Road.  Round trip distance 14 miles, elevation gain 3,000′.  We will have an orientation and safety meeting at the Brookside Motor Inn in Upper Jay Friday evening at 9:00 p.m.  Pre-dawn start at the trailhead.  We will have a pot-luck dinner Saturday evening at the Brookside. Lumberjack breakfast Sunday morning with possible half day ski or hike.  Accommodations at Brookside about $60 each for two nights.  Group size limited.  Contact leader to reserve.

We will XC Ski along the Black River Canal in Boonville beginning at the warming hut.   Following that you may wish to drive to Inlet for the annual Fire and Ice festival.   Bring necessary equipment, clothing and lunch.  Participants can go and do at their own pace. There is usually loads of snow in Chateugay State Forest at this time of year. Let’s hope 2018 lives up to this expectation as it is a great location for a snowshoe outing. We will hike approximately 5 miles on various trails and eat lunch alongside pretty Orwell Brook.

 

8209 YM Moonlight Snowshoe at Beaver Lake

Beaver Lake will keep trails open until 9pm for the entire weekend in anticipation of the full moon coming on March 1st. That means we can go snowshoeing on the trails for a moonlight hike and enjoy the winter evening. Short and easy snowshoe of 3 miles, all abilities welcome. Rentals will be available at Beaver Lake for a small fee, please contact me in advance for possible reservations.
