Every Wednesday some of our members take a hike of 3-6 miles on one of the many trails in CNY (including the North Country National Scenic Trail and the Finger Lakes Trail!).  The first Wednesday of each month during Spring, Summer and Fall is usually devoted to trail maintenance. The Wednesday hikers welcome new participants. Carpooling is the norm. Please bring lunch and sufficient water. Please call or email the leaders if you have Wednesday free and would like to hike.


8206 XC Ski Black River Canal/Inlet Festival

There is usually loads of snow in Chateugay State Forest at this time of year. Let’s hope 2018 lives up to this expectation as it is a great location for a snowshoe outing. We will hike approximately 5 miles on various trails and eat lunch alongside pretty Orwell Brook.

 

8209 YM Moonlight Snowshoe at Beaver Lake

Beaver Lake will keep trails open until 9pm for the entire weekend in anticipation of the full moon coming on March 1st. That means we can go snowshoeing on the trails for a moonlight hike and enjoy the winter evening. Short and easy snowshoe of 3 miles, all abilities welcome. Rentals will be available at Beaver Lake for a small fee, please contact me in advance for possible reservations.

Let’s visit one of the newest nature preserves thru The Nature Conservancy. We will have options including going to shoreline of Hemlock Lake, its boat launch, and/or a connector trail to Candice Lake. Both these lakes are part of the watershed for the Rochester, NY, locale. Come out and take a hike on this new hiking path. Please note that the trail to shoreline and/or Candice Hike descends and then we have to ascend to get back to the Parking lot.

This is a simple spring walk along abandoned Town Line Road (a.k.a. Salsbury) in the Town of Camden. I always enjoy the quaintness of this mostly stone-walled lined old road.  We’ll park at my woodlot on Van Buren Road.  If the group wishes to do more, there is the option of walking around my woodlot. (The DEC ramp is one mile from State Rt 37 in Redwood).  From there, we will walk and talk to my camp on the lake (approx. 1 mile).  Bring a dish to pass and the leader will supply assorted cold meats for sandwiches.  I have kayaks and canoes and loon available.

Let’s return to this favorite flower hike of my old pale, Hal Boyce, and long-time club member. You will see many unusual flowers in this Nature Conservancy locale in northern New York. This will be a slow paced hike to identify, photograph and enjoy this unique Alvar landscape.
